"The American Elderberry, `Sambucus canadensis,' produces either black or purple berries that are eaten by wildlife and can be made into jams and jellies. This deciduous, upright shrub has an arching form and light gray or brown bark. The attractive flowers and berries are produces all season long. During the midsummer, its flattened panicles of small white flowers are produced. Native to North America, the Elderberry can reach a height of twelve feet with a ten-foot spread. It prefers moist soil and full sunlight."
