Pimpinella anisum
"The Anise, `Pimpinella anisum,' produces tasty seeds and leaves that have a sweet licorice flavor. This flavor in often used to intensify sweetness in cakes, pastries and cookies. It is also commonly combined with cinnamon or bay to complement duck, pork or fish. The Romans loved anise so much, they could use it to pay taxes. Anise prefers to be grown in a protected spot because it is easily damaged by strong winds. The soil should be fairly rich and well draining."
