Bitternut Hickory

Carya cordiformis
"The Bitternut Hickory, `Carya cordiformis,' features yellow buds that distinguish it from other species. It also has alternate, compound leaves and relatively large nuts to single it out from other trees. Also known as the Yellow-bud Hickory, this deciduous tree is mainly found on moist, fertile soils throughout the eastern and central United States. Its fall color is generally green to chartreuse, but will sometimes be a brilliant golden-yellow in excellent seasons. This tree is highly intolerant of shade."
