Black Chokeberry

Aronia melanocarpa
"The Black Chokeberry, `Aronia melanocarpa black,' displays its clusters of five-petaled, white flowers in the spring. These flowers are followed by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits in the autumn. The fruits usually will not persist into the winter. The open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy deciduous shrubs will typically grow to three to six feet in height. The plants are easily grown in average, medium wet or well-drained soil in full sunlight to partial shade. They are tolerant of a wide range of soils. The best fruit production will occur when planted in full sunlight. The Chokeberry bush will spread by root suckers to form small colonies."
