Black Locust

Robinia pseudoacacia
"The Black Locust Tree, `Robinia pseudoacacia,' can be found growing naturally on a wide range of sites, but will grow best on rich, moist, limestone soils. This is a very thorny tree that will attain a height of seventy to eighty feet with a trunk diameter of two to three feet. It has escaped cultivation and became naturalized throughout most of North America. Also called the yellow locust tree, the Black Locust is most commonly planted as an ornamental, for a shelterbelt or in land reclamation."
