Black Oak

Quercus velutina
"The Black Oak Tree, `Quercus velutina,' is a deciduous tree with deeply furrowed bark that is nearly black on mature trees. Very similar to the Red Oak, the main difference is the ability of the Black Oak to thrive on poor or varied soils. It will occur naturally on poor sandy or clay hillsides. Historically, the inner bark of the Black Oak tree was important for its tannin and as a source of yellow dye. The Black Oak is also know as the Yellow Oak, Yellowbark Oak or Smoothbark oak."
