Buttonbush

Cephalanthus occidentalis
"The Buttonbush, `Cephalanthus occidentalis,' has a very open, almost gangly habit. It is a rounded, six to eight foot shrub that will occasionally reach up to twelve feet in height. The flowers are very unusual. They are a creamy-white color on spherical heads, just over an inch long, and resemble a ball with hundreds of pins stuck in it. The plants prefer moist locations, and are best when used for naturalizing in wet areas. They are native to a majority of North America, excluding the Pacific Northwest."
