California Giant Garlic

Allium sativum

"The Garlic California Giant, `Allium sativum,' is most commonly used as a condiment and for flavoring gravies, tomato sauces, soups, stews, pickles, salads and breads. This spring planted bulb is a hardy perennial, and each bulb contains a dozen or more cloves. The best flavor is produced from the outer cloves. Garlic prefers to grow in organic soils and like a fair amount of fertilization. The plants have long, flat, grass-like leaves that smell of garlic or onion when they are crushed. The bulb should be planted very early in the spring."
