Common Witch-hazel

Hamamelis virginiana

"The Common Witch-Hazel, `Hamamelis virginiana,' flowers in late October and the blooms will persist until early December. This plant has extraordinary flowering habits. Often, its slender yellow petals are the only signs of color in the dormant winter woods. After pollination, its fruits will become dormant for the winter, and develop over the following growing season. They will finally mature in the fall, about eleven months after pollination. Individual plants will probably not live for more than one hundred years, but they commonly reproduce from root sprouts. These clones have the possibility to live a very long time."
