Flameleaf Sumac

Rhus copallina
"The Flameleaf Sumac, `Rhus copallina,' will often form thickets when it is left along. This shrub is occasionally grown as a small tree, and is widespread in open uplands along fences and in waste places. It will sprout prolifically after a fire. Its leaves feature a winged axis and will fade to a dark purple color in the fall, which is where it receives the common name of Flameleaf. The fruits will mature in late summer, and persist on the plants until winter. The fruits are eatem by many types of birds and the white-tailed deer, who also use it as a browse."
