Fragrant Sumac

Rhus aromatica
"The Fragrant Sumac, `Rhus aromatica,' is a pioneer species that will establish rapidly from seed after heavy disturbances, such as fire. This small shrub is most commonly encountered on limestone uplands, and also grows on acidic sites. Sometimes reaching tree size, Fragrant Sumac will form clonal clumps, but not as extensively as other varieties of the species. The bark was used by Native Americans as an astringent, and its leaves and bark can be used for tanning leather, due to their high content of tannin."
