Mockernut Hickery

Carya tomentosa
"The Mockernut Hickory Tree, `Carya tomentosa,' receives its name from its nuts, which are large with thick shells and very small kernels. These unusually small kernels are sweet and edible. Its bark is gray and marked with deep furrows and branching ridges. The stout twigs are grayish-brown to reddish-brown in color. It is a very desirable tree for both forest plantings or as a shade tree. The Mockernut Hickory is also commonly called the White Hickory, Whiteheart Hickory, Bullnut or Hognut tree."
