In my part of the country, Halloween, at the end of the month, usually is heralded in with snow and cold temperatures.

The whole flower garden should be dug over, but it is most important not to injure the hardy plants that will remain. Where there are a lot of these, it is safer to dig with a fork than a spade. A spade is much more likely to cut roots through if it comes across them. This, of course, presupposes you already have a flower bed with easily worked soil. Kwanzan Flowering Cherry

Kwanzan Flowering Cherry

The Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree, `Prunus serrulata Kwanzan,' will rapidly grow to its mature height of twenty to thirty feet.  This deciduous tree is one of the most popular flowering cherry trees available on the market.  It has clear pink, double blooms, with multiple petals like a carnation.  The flowering period is three weeks long.  Once the blooms have been spent, they will give way to light green foliage that has a red tinge.  This beautiful ornamental flowering tree is also known as the Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree.

Orchid Frost Lamium

Orchid Frost Lamium

The Lamium Orchid Frost, `Lamium maculatum,' has beautiful oval shaped foliage that is bluish green in color with silvery edges.  The short, spiked clear pale pink flowers make it a very attractive ground cover.  It has a plant height of six inches and a spread of up to two feet.  The flowers bloom from May to July.  Lamuim should be grown in hanging baskets, mixed containers, trailing over walls or as an edger.  Its spread must be controlled.  This plant looks great among hostas, ferns, bulbs and wildflowers.

Berry Nice Holly

Berry Nice Holly

The Holly Berry Nice, `Ilex v. Nice,' will provide copious amounts of bright red berries that will be enjoyed in both autumn and winter.  This is a relatively new variety that features superior fruit set and berry retention, as well as a greatly improved resistance to mildew.  The berries of this Proven Winners selection can be included in floral arrangements and other winter decorations.  Planting or massing these colorful plants will greatly help to brighten up any winter landscape.
