Smooth Sumac

Rhus glabra
"The Smooth Sumac, `Rhus glabra,' is usually found in clumps of several to many individuals in a clone. This is a shade-intolerant pioneer that will grow and establish rapidly on heavily disturbed sites, and is particularly common along road and railroad rights-of-way. Sumacs can often be found growing within the first year after a fire. Their fruits are an important source of food for birds. Suited to group plantings in small to large yards, Smooth Sumac is especially useful for attracting birds to naturalized areas. It is also an important species for deer browse."
