October in the Flower Garden Preparing for Winter

A very busy time begins in the garden as the summer and autumn flowers fade. Although much depends upon the weather, the time is approaching quickly when we must put everything in order for the winter. In my part of the country, Halloween, at the end of the month, usually is heralded in with snow and cold temperatures.

The whole flower garden should be dug over, but it is most important not to injure the hardy plants that will remain. Where there are a lot of these, it is safer to dig with a fork than a spade. A spade is much more likely to cut roots through if it comes across them. This, of course, presupposes you already have a flower bed with easily worked soil. Annual plants may all be pulled up and carted away to the compost bin as they cease to flower.

Building a No Dig Garden

The no dig garden is exactly what it describes...a fertile garden bed with no digging at all. It involves layering clean, organic materials that will literally compost around your plants as they grow.

The No Dig Garden is built on top of the ground, so you can build a garden anywhere. This makes it extremely attractive for those sites that have poor soil or are weed infested. It's also a great method of gardening for those who can't (or don't want to) dig a garden patch!

The site you choose for your garden must get at least 5 hours of sunlight a day. Drainage will be good because of the materials that will be used in making the garden.

Zumi Crabapple

The Zumi Crabapple Tree, `Malux x Zumi Calocarpa,' is a semi-dwarf crabapple that may be used as a street tree. It is most valued for its profuse, spring flowering of fragrant, white blooms and its small, glossy, bright red fruit. The crabapples will mature in the autumn, and likely persist into December. It is very effective when planted as a background for other early flowering plants. It is also commonly grown near fences, in groups as a screen or as a specimen planting in a lawn or patio.

Silver Brocade

The Artemisia Silver Brocade, `Artemisia stelleriana,' is a compact, silver-white perennial plant with a height of fifteen inches and a spread of over two feet. This wooly plant produces yellow flowers in early summer that are not very showy. This plant prefers sandy soil but does need a well drained location with full sunlight and a small amount of afternoon shade. This plant can be paired with Echinacea Purple Coneflower or Rudbeckia Black Eyed Susan to add interest to any garden or accent fresh or dried flower arrangements.

Amethyst Myst Coral Bells

The Heuchera Amethyst Myst, `Heuchera x Amethys Myst,' is also known as the Coral Bell or Alumroot. This plant has unique, deep purple foliage that is dusted with silver, unlike the other burgundies of its family. During the spring, its light pink flowers will appear, remaining into the summer. However, these plants are more known for their lovely foliage than their blooms. They look especially great in borders, woodland edges, rock gardens or in mass to form a ground cover. This plant is perfect for a beginning gardener.
